Carnaby Phinisi – The Komodo Island trek for a large group

Carnaby Phinisi

The Komodo Island trek for a large group

Updated 26 October 2026

Komodo Island is a ranger-guided walk to see wild dragons, where dragons live and most walks see them; the park cannot promise a sighting. It is on Carnaby 1's published routes; Carnaby 2's published 3D2N treks at Rinca instead. Rangers walk with every group, and closed shoes are required.

How rangers split a group of 14 or 21

This is not a zoo. The dragons are wild, most walks see dragons, the park cannot promise a sighting, and nobody walks without a park ranger. Plan the day as a walk with a chance of seeing a dragon.

Trails start at the Loh Liang station. How a group of 14 or 21 is divided is the ranger's decision and the park's rule, not ours, and we confirm what applies in writing before sailing. Plan on the group splitting into smaller walks.

The park entry ticket is never in the fare: IDR 250,000 for foreign guests, IDR 50,000 for Indonesian guests on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends, per person. The ranger fee and local levies are not charged on their own: they sit in KEXI's park package with the government ticket (PP 36/2024). It is added to the boat price, unless your quote shows it as included.

What it is not: not a zoo: the dragons are wild, and no sighting is promised · no trekking without a park ranger

Three trail lengths and the ranger's choice

Short, medium and long trails exist, and most itineraries take the shorter ones. The walk takes from 45 to 120 minutes depending on the trail the ranger picks for your group.

A birthday group with a mix of ages does best on the shorter trail, and a group of friends who want to see more can ask the ranger about a longer one. The ranger decides after seeing the group, and the choice stays with the ranger, not with the organiser, because heat, the dragons' positions and the pace of the slowest walker all count.

Stops and their order can change with traffic, weather and tides; the captain decides on the day.

Rinca on Carnaby 2, Komodo on Carnaby 1

Carnaby 1's published routes visit Komodo Island with a ranger walk on day 2 of the 2D1N and the 3D2N. Carnaby 2's published 3D2N has the ranger trek at Rinca and no Komodo Island. Carnaby 1's 4D3N also visits Rinca.

Both are dragon walks with rangers, so the experience is similar and the name on the ticket is different. If the park closes Komodo Island for weather, the walk can move to Rinca, which has stayed open at such times.

What to wear and what the ticket covers

Wear closed shoes and sun cover, because there is little shade on the trails. Long sleeves or sunscreen help, and a hat and water belong in every bag. Sandals are not suitable.

Ranger fees and local levies sit in the park package, not on a bill of their own. See the park fees page for the full list. The 3D2N page shows where the walk falls on the day, and the charter page covers the group price.

FAQ

Will we see a Komodo dragon?

Dragons live here and most walks see them; the park cannot promise a sighting, because they are wild. Rangers lead every walk on Komodo Island and know the trails. We promise the walk with a ranger, not the animal, and the time of day is the captain's choice.

What should we do if a dragon approaches?

Stay with your ranger and follow the instructions given on the spot. Rangers walk with every group, and nobody enters the trails without one. We add no safety advice of our own beyond staying with the ranger and wearing closed shoes.

Is the walk suitable for children?

No age limit is set, and the ranger sets the trail. Children under 3 travel free with a parent or guardian on a booking. Tell us the ages of the children in your group and we confirm what applies before you pay.

Does Carnaby 2 visit Komodo Island?

Not on its published 3D2N, which treks at Rinca instead. Carnaby 1's published routes include Komodo Island on day 2. For other Carnaby 2 routes, such as the 2D1N and the 4D3N, the stops are agreed with you before you pay.
