Kalong Island at sunset

Updated 26 October 2026

Kalong is a mangrove islet where thousands of flying foxes leave the trees at dusk, about 15 minutes after sunset, in a stream lasting around 30 minutes. It is the day 1 sunset stop on both Carnaby boats, watched from the boat. It is the best place for a toast.

Flying foxes at dusk, from the deck

Kalong is not a landing stop. The show is watched from the boat, and nobody steps ashore. No promise is made about numbers or timing on your evening. What the stop gives a celebration is a fixed point in the day: everyone is on deck, in the same place, at the same hour.

It is a mangrove islet between Komodo and Rinca where thousands of flying foxes roost. They leave in a long stream at dusk, about 15 minutes after sunset, and the stream lasts around 30 minutes. Sunset falls between 17:49 and 18:27 depending on the month.

On Carnaby 1 the stop closes day 1 after Kelor and Manjarite. On Carnaby 2 it follows the optional stop at Bidadari, then Manjarite and Kelor. In both cases it is the last stop before dinner on day 1.

A toast timed to the sunset

Arrive early. The sun goes first, and the bats follow, so the toast belongs in the gap between the two. In July sunset at Kalong falls near 17:57, and in December near 18:14.

Candles on a cake are a request, not part of the fare. A cake can be arranged on request and quoted separately, and we confirm the plan in writing. Coffee, tea and mineral water are in the fare; alcohol is not.

Tell the crew the cue in advance and agree who sings, who films and who carries the cake up to the deck table. A rehearsal of ten seconds saves a wobbling candle. The birthday page has the full birthday run of show.

The table on deck once the bats have gone

Dinner is one of the daily meals on both boats and is served on board once the stream thins. The deck table is the setting; the indoor lounge, with its TV and karaoke, is the fallback if the weather turns. For 14 guests on Carnaby 1 or 21 on Carnaby 2, ask us how the table is laid.

Where the boat spends the night depends on the weather and the captain's decision that day. The dinner-on-deck page covers the table, the toast and the dinner ashore as an alternative.

A long lens and a charged phone

A long lens helps, because the bats are far and fast. A charged camera or phone matters more, because the stream lasts only about half an hour and nobody recharges mid-show.

Shoot from the sundeck for a clear line over the mangroves, and keep the phone lights off so the bats are not lost in glare. The 3D2N page lays out the whole route, and the comparison page compares the two boats.

FAQ

What time do the bats leave?

About 15 minutes after sunset, in a long stream that lasts around 30 minutes. Sunset at Kalong falls between 17:49 and 18:27 through the year, so the exact time depends on your month. Arrive before the sun drops, not after.

Can we step ashore at Kalong?

No. Kalong is not a landing stop; the flying foxes are watched from the boat. The boat stays off the mangroves, and the captain chooses the position by the wind and the light that evening, so nobody is asked to come ashore.

Can we hold a toast on deck?

Yes. The toast fits between sunset and the first bats, with the whole group on deck. Coffee, tea and mineral water are in the fare, alcohol is not included, and a cake is arranged on request and quoted separately.
